Workstation style computing came into prominence towards the middle of the 1980's and into the 1990's. It was with these computers that one saw heavy use of the graphical user interface (or GUI) as the primary I/O mechanism for interacting with a computer. These machines were also used to form networks, which eventually lead to the modern WWW era. Although the bursting of the "dot com" bubble brought an end to many of the manufacturers who produced them, the influence of their innovations are still strongly apparent in todays' computing devices.
